Petr Uhl

Petr Uhl, engineer and journalist, was an activist in 1968 and during Normalization until his arrest and imprisonment in 1969. A signatory of Charter 77 and a founding member of VONS, Mr. Uhl has long been a prominent advocate for human rights both in his home country and abroad, for which he was imprisoned 1969-1975 and 1979-1984. From 1989 to 1990, Mr. Uhl was a member of the advisory council for the Coordinating Center of Civic Forum. Since 1996 he has been the editor of the Prague daily Právo, and since 1998 the commissioner for Human Rights of the Czech Republic. The interview, conducted in Czech, took place in Mr. Uhl's home in Prague.
